about

Originally recorded for Robyn's solo EP, "The Gold We Seek". Studio recording can be listened to at robynmello.bandcamp.com/track/stumped-2

"Stumped" is one of the first songs Robyn ever wrote when music and lyrics started pouring out of her in summer 2011. The storyline here is hard to describe, but it's essentially about what it feels like to be a freedom-seeking, magic-making, exponentially loving human living in an unconscious, capitalistic, materialistic, fear-based religion reality.

lyrics

Hands in a thousand places
plastic animals on bleached lawns
practiced Voodoo sparks from parking lots
scared what he's got under each arm
He walks city streets with closed eyes & red hawk wings
wooden bones he's carved from willow & he sings
the songs of aged men in the ground

Wood & feathers
stones & rivers
scales & leather
we are not
Touch not
take not
waste not
want not
learn each lesson we forgot

Incandescent streams have filled beneath his feet
rains to cleanse the bleeding earth
are running down the empty streets
everyone's afraid the future's here
the strings that guide his gliding steps
are they held by God or spectres near?

//

He stops to roll inside himself
his sockets glance astray
"What are you looking at?"
The scared around him say
I walk on by & smile my smile
& he stops & looks my way
Says, "The new breed of alchemists
isn't seeking fame or gold
feel stories seep from every pore
my hands are yours to hold
we own the keys to all the doors
we are the gold we seek

//

But leave behind
the shallow mind
that wants to be
what you have seen
the miracles in everything
are best when every life is king
