about

The only date that's not just a day, but a command.

Our friend, Josh Mayer, organizes live music every Friday at Saxby's Coffeehouse in Haddonfield, NJ, and we've had a chance to play there as many times as we've wanted as a result. It's a great atmosphere, and it offers us a way to test out new material, get out of our holes, and see people we love.

This time around, Zach LoPresti joined us for most of the set, pumping our sound up several notches with his glorious guitar-playing. It was a particularly fun, high-energy set that we want to share!

Track Name: Stumped
Hands in a thousand places
plastic animals on bleached lawns
practiced Voodoo sparks from parking lots
scared what he's got under each arm
He walks city streets with closed eyes & red hawk wings
wooden bones he's carved from willow & he sings
the songs of aged men in the ground

Wood & feathers
stones & rivers
scales & leather
we are not
Touch not
take not
waste not
want not
learn each lesson we forgot

Incandescent streams have filled beneath his feet
rains to cleanse the bleeding earth
are running down the empty streets
everyone's afraid the future's here
the strings that guide his gliding steps
are they held by God or spectres near?

//

He stops to roll inside himself
his sockets glance astray
"What are you looking at?"
The scared around him say
I walk on by & smile my smile
& he stops & looks my way
Says, "The new breed of alchemists
isn't seeking fame or gold
feel stories seep from every pore
my hands are yours to hold
we own the keys to all the doors
we are the gold we seek

//

But leave behind
the shallow mind
that wants to be
what you have seen
the miracles in everything
are best when every life is king

Track Name: Hidden in Plain View
Pieces of earth stuck to skin,
worshipping what we were born with,
if only the tides could rise higher,
I'd swim 'till I ran out of breath.

Chorus:
Breath is what binds us
and minds are what reel us in,
accepting the paths that will cross
when the times comes.
When fires rage, ice succumbs
and brings floods.

Atoms collide every instant,
so common we always miss it.
Planets align on a cycle
with years in between,
so it's special.

Shadows betray.
Run away.
Rooted in place--
attached in a name to my eyelids.

No matter where you go, there you are.
Hide from destiny, you're still a star
made of light and flesh and guts and heart,
all coursing through our veins when we're apart.

Inhale and exhale,
destiny, nonlinearity.
Sometimes they decide;
sometimes we choose.
Hidden in plain view,
nothing to lose.
Track Name: Body Pharmacy
Maybe there's somethin' to this stuff,
all this talk about love and drugs,
making fun of serious news,
holding on as hard as I can to you.

How many tries 'till we get it right?
Shimmying down the spout of life,
listening to the din of the crowd,
distilling the sound to the spirit of the few.

Make beautiful music with me, baby,
set off sparks like lightning and a key,
electricity.
Light the world on fire
like two live wires,
cosmic chemistry.

Create what's in your mind,
rewind, soak, rinse, repeat,
freebase this reality,
the drugs you want are in me--
receive.

Make beautiful music with me, baby,
swim through my veins like stingrays in the deep,
wet and slippery.
The eyes of a child,
the call of the wild,
body pharmacy.

Breathe beautiful
life beautiful
world beautiful
smile beautiful
mind beautiful
ride beautiful

Track Name: Bogwitch
Gonna take you down to these old, dark places,
sticky and sweet with dew.
All the places you've forgotten,
they remember you.

Do we only love when we see ourselves
or something we'd like to be?
If God created us in his own image,
his image is actually me, sayin':

"Don't stray too far from the trees.
"In open meadows, predators see--
"flying in clouds, lurking in grass,
"whispering, 'This day may be your last.'"

Gonna take you down to these old, dark places,
sticky and sweet with dew.
Gonna take you down to our hiding places;
they remember you.

Exploring the veil between waking and sleep,
what are you saying to me?
My being, weeping deeply,
here beneath the oldest tree.

My limbs uncurl, my eyes rise up,
all the leaves have come undone.
My voice tunes in to skeleton keys,
and this pours out my lungs:

"Gonna take you down to these old, dark places,
"sticky and sweet with dew.
Gonna lay you down in these sacred spaces
here in the great bayou."

I am now a woman all brown,
cloak covering my head,
fallen logs my organ pipes,
playing tones to wake the dead, singin':

"Dig in. Deeper-- to another layer.
Feel my body sway.
Lay beside me. Listen to me closely:
all good things decay."

Baby, we'll be dirty,
but we're happy,
and we'll never go home.
Track Name: Spiderhands
Spiderhands
I am surrounded
weaving dreams
web in the sky
changing plans
masking reality
to be the masters

Don't don't don't don't don't don't write it down.
Down down down down down down let me out.
Lay me, lay me, lay me in the ground.
Make me, make me, make me tell you now.

Spider spell
what are we casting?
Future self,
all that I'm asking for--
silky lines weaving us stranger days
becoming hazy

Don't don't don't don't don't don't write it down.
Down down down down down down let me out.
Lay me, lay me, lay me in the ground.
Make me, make me, make me tell you now.

Is this real or is it memory?
Heaving breaths,
tangible fantasies,
building up love ceremonies
just to be beaten--

Down down down down down down let me out.
Don't don't don't don't don't don't write it down.
Lay me, lay me, lay me in the ground.
Make me, make me, make me tell you now.

Spiderhands
I am surrounded
weaving dreams
web in the sky
changing plans
masking reality
to be the masters

Don't don't don't don't don't don't write it down.
Down down down down down down let me out.
Lay me, lay me, lay me in the ground.
Make me, make me, make me tell you now.
Make me tell you now.
Don't make me tell you now.
Track Name: Aim For The Night
I'm feeling the weight of your memory
full moons and nostalgia surround me
but nobody makes us feel anything
and we master our own destinies
this space still holds your energy
and you visit me in dreams
but my face in the mirror speaks truly

You said, "Let this night take you,
"let this night take you,
"let this night take you.
"Aim for the night,
"aim for the night,
"aim for the night,
"although it just might swallow you swallow you swallow you swallow you whole
"I will walk with you down this road once known."

A strange day that reeks of old magick,
so I breathe in and temper it all
while the story and blur of your faces
resound in my voice and the grace I now learn.
Though it's too late to heal with touch,
I will speak into the sun,
find forgiveness on the wind.

I pray, "Let this night take you,
"let this night take you,
"let this night take you.
"Aim for the night,
"aim for the night,
"aim for the night
"to sleep darkness light behind your behind your behind your behind your eyes.
The battlefield now becomes your own."

Your dissonance was just a test
to teach me a lesson,
to leave me still guessing,
a hole in my net,
the patchwork still fading,
some squares still need mending.
My needle will thread through this cloth,
and a rolling stone gathers no moss,
so I will stop moving, I will stop moving, I will stop moving.
I will aim for the night, aim for the night, aim for the night
to paint future sights inside my inside my inside my inside my dreams.
I now crave every night in this bed alone.

I'm listening to things more closely,
more open to all your realities,
observing each movement and folly
while I dance to my own melody
and pluck songs from the trees.
The guide in my core she speaks freely
from a depth and an altitude I don't yet see.

I will let this night take me, let this night take me, let this night take me.
Aim for the night, aim for the night, aim for the night,
no more wrong versus right designing designing designing designing this life.
Will you walk with me down this road unknown?
Track Name: Won't You?
Gonna use this body till I'm 103
I want you to come with me
won't you please come with me?
Got all these vultures, sheep, and snakes
livin' lives so short and fast-paced
but, honey, we've got time,
please take your time with me.

So many days between our gaze
so many people to entertain
but still at the end when I meet you again
perched under trees,
in my dreams,
this time you're waiting for me.

Gonna use this body to live a life so long and full and free
I want you to come with me
won't you please come with me?
We can both grow stronger every day,
balance high-stakes work with child's play,
honey, now's the time,
please spend some time on me.

So many barriers to break
so much advice we shouldn't take
as strong as I am, when I meet you again,
I want to fall, surrender all,
recharge and retreat in your arms.

Gonna use this body to love unconditionally
oh, I wanna love you!
Won't you let me love you?
If you forget where you're goin',
think back to these moments
before we run out of time,
please save some time for me.
Track Name: Descendants
There once was a coven in the middle of the ocean
The witches there made sweet love & sweet potions
They did not retreat, the sea rose up around them
An island of magic braves waves by the thousands

A beauty with shells on each finger sang:
"Welcome
To our island of peace
To a piece of relief
Oh, away from non-believers, sheep, & thieves.”

Explorers, they sailed through the waves just to find them
Dozens of ships sank before they could break in
Sorceresses swam in the shallows & cheered them on
Seeking companions who could be for them just as strong.

An enchantress with horns in her ears sang:
"Dear sisters,
Oh, stand patient & tall,
Oh, we can’t save them all,
Oh, some sailors will crash & will burn & will fall.”

For long centuries all the women spun stories,
Shared days & nights full of fire & glory,
Each did her part to cast spells for the future,
That they’d be reborn & their bonds would endure.

All sisters with warrior hearts sang:
"Please listen,
You descend from our line,
You were born just in time,
To find your circle, complete it, & shine.”
Track Name: Moon Bath
Let's show the moon what it deserves.
Honey, pull it over and outline my curves.
Orion's eyes think we look real nice.
Let's give him a show, darlin', don't think twice.

Gotta let the Big Dipper shower me with stars.
For tonight, the big picture is curled up inside your arms.
That wise queen in the sky said, "Don't forget to pray."
I said, "Sure thing, Your Highness, but in my world we call it play."
On this clear night my choice--though there's so much work to do--
is to revel and rejoice in this moon bath drawn for two.

We were born to contradictions,
a sacred land full of virtue and sin,
pornographers and puritans,
mothers, harlots, and heroines.

Gotta let trumpetflowers build for me a crown.
Ladybugs and daisies sing love songs all around.
That dusk breeze in my hair said, "Don't forget to pray."
I said, "Always, dear, but in my own private way."
As the sun goes down--though there's so much work to do--
I will dance in scarlet light and bathe in this moon with you.

This time of year, all good things glow.
Harvests begin, reap what you sow.
Be careful of the spin of Mercury.
Remember love, joy, and humility.

Gotta let salt and fire get under my skin.
Lightning bugs and blueberries feed our souls again.
Bullfrogs bellow on the beach, "Don't forget to pray."
I said, "Stop, look, and listen to everything I do and say."
As the light returns--though there's so much work to do--
I will cherish all these stars and final moonlight here with you.
