about

The studio recording of "Spiderhands" can be heard here: theradicans.bandcamp.com/track/spiderhands

A great live recording of this song with crowdsourced drum circle from Beardfest 2015 can also be viewed here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLc0ckilJ-4

This song centers around the driving beat of the djembe (Ethan and Robyn's drum of choice) and is heavily influenced by Robyn's academic and spiritual interests in African revolution, religion, culture, and music. The spider is one of her closest spirit kin in dreams and waking life, and it's also present in several African and Native American creation myths. Anansi. Grandmother spider. Weaver of worlds. It's also about forbidden love, musicians with lightning-fast fingers, and her strong belief that writing something down speaks prophecy.

In this case, she was right.

lyrics

Spiderhands
I am surrounded
weaving dreams
web in the sky
changing plans
masking reality
to be the masters

Don't don't don't don't don't don't write it down.
Down down down down down down let me out.
Lay me, lay me, lay me in the ground.
Make me, make me, make me tell you now.

Spider spell
what are we casting?
Future self,
all that I'm asking for--
silky lines weaving us stranger days
becoming hazy

Don't don't don't don't don't don't write it down.
Down down down down down down let me out.
Lay me, lay me, lay me in the ground.
Make me, make me, make me tell you now.

Is this real or is it memory?
Heaving breaths,
tangible fantasies,
building up love ceremonies
just to be beaten--

Down down down down down down let me out.
Don't don't don't don't don't don't write it down.
Lay me, lay me, lay me in the ground.
Make me, make me, make me tell you now.

Spiderhands
I am surrounded
weaving dreams
web in the sky
changing plans
masking reality
to be the masters

Don't don't don't don't don't don't write it down.
Down down down down down down let me out.
Lay me, lay me, lay me in the ground.
Make me, make me, make me tell you now.
Make me tell you now.
Don't make me tell you now.
